Mrs. Jennie Gheesling 4th and 5th Grade Reading EIP Teacher

Welcome to the 2023-2024 School Year!

My name is  Mrs. Jennie Baggett Gheesling. I am a 1990 graduate of Thomson High School, married to Alan Gheesling (a 1989 THS graduate) and the mother of Evan Gheesling (class of 2014), Ivey (Gheeslingj) Simpson (class of 2018) and Ryan Alane Gheesling (class of 2026). Evan is currently living in Boone, North Carolina with his wife McKenzie and our granddaughter, Madi Rose. While he was a student at THS, he was a member of the Varsity Football and Soccer teams. Our daughter Ivey, was the starting THS Varsity pitcher beginning in the 9th grade where she earned honors as a region player all four years of high school and was named Region 3AAAA Pitcher of the Year for 2017. She is now married and in nursing school at the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi. Our youngest daughter Ryan, is a 10th grade student and Varsity cheerleader for THS and member of the THS Track team.  My husband and I are both former softball, baseball and basketball coaches.  McDuffie County School sports are a huge part of the Gheesling family's lives- we all enjoy watching our students participate in the athletic programs in our system! We are active members of  community and attend church at Thomson Presbyterian Church. As you can probably tell, I love my family (and could talk about them all day!).

I began my teaching career in Thomson at Maxwell Elementary in 1995 as a kindergarten teacher. I worked at J.A. Maxwell  Elementary for 2 years prior to the rezoning of the county, then I transferred to Thomson Elementary where I continued to teach kindergarten for the next 11 years. During my time in kindergarten, I was named a Golden Apple Award winner for 2002.  After that time I taught reading and math for the 3rd grade before coming to NES. At NES, I have taught 4th-grade reading, social studies and for the last 9 years, 5th-grade reading and ELA. This will be the 3rd year that I am the EIP Reading teacher. In 2017, I was named Teacher of the Year for RL Norris Elementary School. What a privilege to be chosen by my peers for this honor!

RL Norris is a fantastic place to learn and grow. It has always been a privilege to be part of this school system- most of my family are THS graduates and I am proud to call Thomson our home.

My goal as a teacher is to love and educate your child as if they were my own. I understand that children learn through different modalities, have different abilities and talents, and learn at different paces. My number one priority as a teacher is to prepare your son or daughter to become successful as a student and as a person. I pledge to you to give my very best each day and ask that you as parents play an active role in the education of your child. Please feel free to contact me via email or at the school for any questions you may have or if I can be of any help to you or your child.

I look forward to a GREAT year!

Whether you are learning from home or in the classroom, there are things that you can do to keep learning. Below are a list of resources that I will use as I assist reading teachers at school, in my goggle classroom, and for at home learning. Students will be given access to Google Classroom to see my assignments, and I have provided links to virtual reading libraries that students can use if they do not have literature at home.

READING:
  • Brainpop lessons on skills
  • readworks.org
  • commonlit.org
  • newsela.org
ELA
  • Escape Rooms on skills (fun and interactive lessons)
  • Brainpop.org
  • BOOM cards
WRITING
  • Writing Prompts loaded into Google Classroom
  • Type your papers into Google Classroom (this allows me to interact and teach alongside your child) and use the share button to email  your work to me. Just type in my email address or name.

Please continue to read. Remember, reading 20 minutes a day not only increases your vocabulary, but also helps increase test scores. BUT MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY TEST- reading daily makes you a better reader, it can take you on virtual field trips, teaches you about the world around you and prepares you for life outside the classroom. READ EVERY DAY!
You may hit this link to find online text to read and enjoy at home.

I am looking forward to a FANTASTIC year!

Love you guys-
Mrs. Gheesling
